In 1953, the Oklahoma State Legislature proclaimed June 29th as Maria Tallchief Day. Born in Fairfax, Oklahoma in 1925, Maria Tallchief grew up to become America’s first prima ballerina. Her father was a member of the Osage Nation. Throughout her career, many tried to persuade Tallchief to change her last name, but she refused.
