Hundreds of elephant fans enjoyed hands-on activities at Hamill Family Play Zoo, marched in a parade to the new Pachyderm Yard, took in a Zoo Chat demonstration with Christy Elephant, and heard about our elephant conservation program from zoo director Dr. Stuart Strahl. Black and rufous giant elephant shrews, also known as sengis, are more closely related to elephants than they are to shrews. They belong to the superorder Afrotheria, which includes elephants, hyrax, aardvarks, and manatees! They do a lot of scratching with their back feet, but it's not because they're itchy.
