The city of Linz has a long and storied past, with initial settlements established during the Neolithic Age. Linz was first mentioned in historical records in 799 (as Linze) at which time a castle stood on the site during the reign of Emperor Charlemagne. In more recent times, after the Anschluß with Austria in 1938, Hitler envisioned the construction of an imposing retirement home in place of the castle.
