What is an Rf? Rf is short for retention factor. It tells us how much a compound will move through a stationary phase, relative to the solvent front. We calculate by: movement of the compound/movement of the solvent. It is there always between 0 and 1, with closer to 0 meaning little movement due to a strong attraction to the stationary phase or poor solubility in the mobile phase, and closer to 1 meaning the opposite. We can use Rf to compare known compounds, in order to track a reaction or che
