We are delighted to share a video featuring two of our tiniest patients. A nest, complete with tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbird chicks arrived yesterday after it came down in a storm. We were not able to replace it, but will continue to try when weather clears. Few people have the honor of witnessing baby hummingbirds as they are fed. Their parent are not doing the feeding, we think they are still pretty amazing. Hummingbirds eat aphids and other tiny insects as well as nectar. Protein is vital to

Wilson Snipe Chick Admitted to Raptor Education Group, Inc. A few days ago, Raptor Education Group, Inc. (REGI) admitted a tiny patient. The Wilson's Snipe is not uncommon in the U.S., but rarely seen due to their secretive nature and wetland habitat. Chicks are covered with cryptic colored black, brown and white streaked down and blend into the environment around them. Snipes are related to Woodcocks. They have the same flexible beak that allows them to probe the soil to locate worms, insects, a

We've admitted several adult Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the past few weeks. During inclement weather, hummers often seek sheltered areas such as open garages or other buildings. Without adequate food, they simply run out of energy and are often found on the floor of such buildings. If you find a hummingbird laying on the ground or floor of a building and it does not appear to be injured, make sure it is in a safe place, away from predators. Offer the hummingbird sugar water from a syringe or

Pre-release examination of an adult bald eagle. This eagle was admitted with a very high lead level in early fall. With a level as high as she had she should not have survived. Forgive the spelling error...a middle of the night effort, but to change it we have to delete it and then all the shares go away. No time to worry about that today however...eagle captures going on. | Raptor Education Group, Inc.

VIDEO MAY BE DISTURBING TO SOME. We admitted an adult Downy Woodpecker last night from the Wausau area. Thank you to the person that found and transported him after a long day at work. He has neurologic and other symptoms consistent with poisoning. Woodpeckers eat insects. When homeowners spray for insects or actually treat their trees for insects and larva, the birds that eat those insects become poisoned and die as well. Please think before you use toxins. | Raptor Education Group, Inc.

Exciting UPDATE on Bald Eaglet From Laona! We have some GREAT news to share this morning! Our eaglet patient has been showing signs of improvement. Yesterday he started eating on his own, about 100 grams of meat per feeding! He seems less “uncomfortable”. This morning we took radiographs and as you can see in the photos! The hook is no longer there! We are elated! Soon he will be able to join the other eagles with their foster mom! We could not be mire relieved! We know our exclusion techniques

Our two baby great-horned owlets have started to really explore their enclosure! The youngest has been getting braver and bolder and they both have been very active. Here you can see them flapping their wings, hopping from perch to perch, preening, and even a big rouse from our oldest. The youngest got a little ahead of herself in an attempt to reach the top perch, but she recovered. Clumsiness is all a part of their learning process! | Raptor Education Group, Inc.

Loon Rescued in the "Miracle on the Ice" Event is Improving I have a great video to share today of the loon rescued from Lake Nokomis near Tomahawk by Kevin and Linda Grenzer. They called her rescue "The Miracle on Ice rescue." This beautiful lady loon was seconds away from certain death when she was rescued. Our thanks to the great folks that called for help and to our super loon rescue team! She is a happy lady now, gaining weight and starting to preen which is an indication she is regaining b

There have been many questions about the way we handle and care for our patients at Raptor Education Group, Inc. . Many people ask if our patients are sedated when they are being cared for. The short answer is "no" they are not under sedation or anesthesia. However, you may notice you do not see fear or stress in the bird either. Let me explain...Our patients cannot "talk" . They cannot tell us what happened to them, where they hurt or how much. They do however communicate in many ways. We pay r

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Did you know that American Crows, much like parrots, can learn to mimic a variety of sounds and words? Crows are known for their extreme intelligence and some have even been documented making and using tools! 🤯 If you’ve been to visit us in the last year, you may have heard one of our crows, Harvey, talking! Harvey has a pretty big vocabulary and he can often be heard saying things like, “what are you doing?” “Hello” “Hi” “Hi Harvey” “Good Boy” making kiss noises, and scream

A quick update of yesterday loon fallout event. Thank you everyone that has been involved directly with patients or indirectly, sending us positive energy and kindness. I apologize if we missed calls with questions. I will answer questions as soon as possible. This event has been different than those in the past. One reason is that of more public involvement. You, our supporters and followers, shared our post, called folks living in the area of the event and in general, got the word out. That ma
