Ever hear a sharp "wichety-wichety-wichety" in a marsh or weedy field? That’s the Common Yellowthroat, one of the flashiest little warblers around! Males sport a bold black mask and bright yellow throat (superhero vibes, anyone?), while females keep it more subtle. These energetic birds love dense vegetation and are masters at staying hidden, so consider it a win if you spot one! Keep your ears open this summer and you might just meet this tiny masked singer in the wild. Bonus question: What oth

After days, weeks, or sometimes months in care, our volunteers and staff get to release our patients back to their native habitats. While it is not the fate of every patient who comes through our doors, it is the ultimate goal and also the most rewarding result for those that do this hard work. It’s possible, but a miracle, that a Red-tailed Hawk can come to us with multiple broken bones, unable to fly or eat, can go through orthopedic surgery at our hospital, recover in an outdoor enclosure, bu

It’s officially skunk season in the Wildlife Care Center! The Wildlife Care Center is currently caring for 9 orphaned Striped Skunks, with 2-5 new additions each week! It’s officially skunk season! Striped Skunks know the power of their stink from day one, and our wildlife rehabilitators can generally age a skunk without even seeing it, just based on the intensity and foulness of the smell it omits! Young infant skunks have little control over their spray, and generally smell “sweaty.” They have

Not all ducks quack! Some, like this Northern Pintail male, have a short whistle-like chirp, as you can hear in this video. With their long necks and stunning plumage, Northern Pintails are the picture of elegance. But they’re not just about looks—they’re also incredible travelers. During migration, they can reach speeds of up to 48 miles per hour, flying through the night. The longest nonstop flight ever recorded for a Northern Pintail covered an impressive 1,800 miles. 📷: Mick Thompson | Bird

One of the best and hardest parts of learning to bird by ear is the fact that birds don’t just have one sound. They have many, from songs to calls. Many might be able to recognize the iconic Great Horned Owl song, or at least be able to tell that it’s from an owl species thanks to the typical “Hoo”. But, for many, hearing this female call out in the forest might leave them stumped. Take a listen. What bird sounds have stumped you? Video by Mick Thompson | Bird Alliance of Oregon

We had to share this video of Wildlife Care Center Manager Stephanie Herman releasing a young Barn Owl at sunset. This Barn Owl was one of three owlets that came in after accidentally being relocated on a hay bale. It may sound odd, but it's an annual occurrence when hay is picked up for distribution. Because it's impossible to pinpoint exactly where the bale came from, we can't reunite the babies with their parents. Thankfully, we can care for them and release them after they are fully fledged

Bald Eagle releases are amazing every single time. This bird was found on the ground fighting with another adult eagle in late November. The two birds had their talons locked into each other before the other eagle finally flew off, leaving this one on the ground unable to stand or fly away. A good Samaritan and a few neighbors brought the bird to DoveLewis after hours, and then the bird was transported to our Wildlife Care Center. The fight left the eagle pretty banged up with abrasions on both

Last week 80 people gathered to count Marbled Murrelets on the central Oregon coast as a part of our annual community science effort around this endangered species. After an evening presentation, folks headed to their campsite or hotel room to get a good night’s sleep before waking up to count birds at 5 a.m. Then it was off to one of five locations for a magical morning, listening to the forest come alive. We had a good number of detections, both auditory and visual, as these birds headed inlan

This fledgling Pileated Woodpecker, spotted right outside the window at our Interpretive Center, may look a little awkward as it explores the world outside its nest, but this is all a part of growing up! How many of us could stand on one leg and balance perfectly on a log that's bobbing up and down? 👀 This striking Wood Duck pair makes it look so easy! Did you know that Wood Ducks practice egg-dumping, or "intraspecific brood parasitism"? Females will visit other nests to lay their eggs, leaving them to be raised by other moms. This behavior is on the rise thanks to the many artificial nest boxes out there, especially when they are located close together. In some places, over half of all nests

In the spring and summer, baby birds are some of the most common animals brought to wildlife rehabilitation centers. However, many baby birds don’t need rescuing and would be much better cared for by their parents in the wild. So why do people think they need to be rescued? A lot of people aren’t aware of the “fledging” stage in a bird’s life. Many bird species’ young have to leave the nest and spend a week or so on the ground while they build up their flight muscles. During this time, their par
