On this day in 1755, the British Crown ordered the expulsion of the Acadians, previously considered neutral, after an increase in tension between France and Great-Britain. Tens of thousands of people will be forcibly deported, and several thousand will die. But the Acadians proved resilient. In the decades that followed, some came back to the Maritimes and others established themselves in Louisiana. Since 2005, July 28 has been the Day of Commemoration of the Great Upheaval.
