Unity State, also known as Western Upper Nile, [3] is a state in South Sudan. Unity State is in the Greater Upper Nile region. Unity is inhabited predominantly by two ethnic groups: the Nuer majority, and the Dinka minority.

The Greater Unity area comprises 9 Counties including Pariang and Abienmhom in northern part; Rubkona and Guit in central region; and, Koch, Mayendit, Leer and Panyjiar in the southern side; and Mayom in the north-west region. Unity area borders Sudan to the north, Lakes State to the south, Western Bar El Ghazal to west, and Jonglei to the East.

Programmatically, Unity State is one of the most challenging states in South Sudan, primarily because of conflict and secondarily because of inaccessibility due to poor infrastructure and the swampy nature of its land.

situation in the Unity State continues to be undermined by inadequate policing, absence of rule of law, shrunken economy and joblessness among youth, and ready availability of modern weaponry in the hands of criminal elements.

All key informants received regular information about location(s) across seven of Unity State’s nine counties: Guit, Koch, Leer, Mayendit, Mayom, Panyijiar, and Rubkona (see Map 1).
