Federal investigators looking for the cause of the January collision between a passenger jet and an Army helicopter near Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people are recommending a ban on some helicopter flights.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Transportation Safety Board chairman called for immediate changes at Washington, D.C.'s Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, saying the current helicopter routes around the airport "pose an intolerable risk to aviation safety."

The National Transportation Safety Board said the separation between helicopters and jets in the area was insufficient and increased “chances of a midair collision.”

Nearly two months after American Airlines flight 5342 collided with a helicopter, leading to 67 fatalities, the National Transportation Safety Board has provided an update on the investigation.

Investigators will offer updates Tuesday in the probe into the devastating crash between an American Airlines plane and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter that killed all 67 people on board both aircraft.
