California, Oregon, Illinois and five other U.S. states have asked a U.S. judge to award them legal fees for winning an order in federal court blocking Kroger’s now-abandoned $25 billion deal for grocery rival Albertsons.

Its planned merger with Kroger over, Boise’s Albertsons supermarket chain is getting a new CEO. Vivek Sankaran, who has run the nation’s second-largest traditional grocery company since September 2019,

Albertsons operating chief Susan Morris has held that post since January 2018. The disclosure of Sankaran’s impending departure comes the same day Kroger said CEO Rodney McMullen would resign.

Ron Sargent, lead director of Kroger’s board of directors, was appointed to serve as CEO and chairman of the board on an interim basis. During the company’s Q4 earnings call this week, Sargent said Kroger has hired a nationally recognized search firm and will look at internal and external candidates to replace McMullen on a permanent basis.

Earlier this week, the company completed a major renovation of its North Montana store, and announced it plans to close the Fee Street location.

Susan Morris, who has worked at the supermarket chain for nearly 40 years, will take over the top role on May 1 when Vivek Sankaran retires.
