Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embalo says he will run for a second term in November, amid tensions with the opposition that refuses to recognize him as the country’s current president.

Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability, including multiple coup attempts. Embalo himself has survived two in the last three years, most recently in December 2023, which led to the dissolution of parliament.

Guinea-Bissau's President Umaro Sissoco Embalo said on Monday he would run for a second term in November, backtracking on earlier vows to step down and potentially stoking tensions over when his current term ends and over postponed elections.

President Embaló's term in office has officially expired. However, he remains in power and intends to run for re-election in late 2025, if at all. The opposition and civil society are calling it an "institutional coup.
