With one out on the board, JMU catcher Jack Cannizzaro singled to the shortstop to put a runner on the base path. After second baseman Coleman Calabrese was hit by a pitch, shortstop Maddux Fleck doubled down the left-field line to score Cannizzaro. It was once again a two-run game, and the Dukes weren’t done scoring.
After scoring the first three runs to lead 3-0 through three and a half innings, JMU responded with a three-run bottom of the fourth inning. Maddux Fleck and Eli Steadman each had RBI doubles. Wyatt Peifer added a sacrifice fly.
In James Madison’s season opener against No. 2 North Carolina, the Tar Heels spread out the Dukes’ offense. The Terps ran a similar defense and produced near-identical results. They consistently used double teams to force the ball out of Epke’s stick and prevent her from getting to her cuts and dodges.
