The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked Russia to mediate with Iran on its nuclear program, reports Bloomberg. Trump voiced this interest directly to Putin in a phone conversation in February.
"We are primarily interested in understanding the essence of President Trump's new line," a former Russian envoy told Newsweek.
Russia has agreed to facilitate communication between the US and Iran on key geopolitical issues, including Tehran’s nuclear program and its support for anti-US proxies in the region, as per a Bloomberg report.
Iranian officials told The Telegraph that Tehran was considering the request from Putin. In recent months, things have changed drastically for Iran following Trump's return to the White House. While Iran's 85-year-old supreme leader in August opened the door to negotiations with the West, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed it shut again in February.
