The ‘Laken Riley Act’ is named after the 22-year-old student who was killed on the University of Georgia campus by Venezuelan migrant José Antonio Ibarra last February. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), he allegedly entered the country illegally in 2022 and was charged with shoplifting but was not detained by ICE.
A joint investigation by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and other local agencies revealed the man was handing off the stolen checks to be cashed. Surveillance video also captured someone in a white Toyota Camry stealing checks from mailboxes, according to authorities.
They cracked a big case in Calcasieu Parish where a man and woman from Georgia have been arrested for a check theft and forging scheme.
