Conor McDavid and Vasily Podkolzin scored third-period goals to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild Wednesday night at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The Wild (27-14-4) and Oilers (28-13-3) were tied 3-3 entering the third period before Podkolzin and McDavid's goals pushed them over the top.

The Oilers captain was given a major penalty in the dying seconds of the team’s 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. This was due to McDavid cross-checking Canucks forward Conor Garland in the head following a lengthy battle between the two in the middle of the Vancouver zone.

The Edmonton Oilers have placed Derek Ryan on waivers today for the purpose of sending him to the American Hockey League. The Oilers announced a couple of moves this afternoon after they lost 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks last night.

The incident occurred after McDavid and Garland became entangled in the high slot for about 15 seconds. Frustration boiled over as McDavid wrestled free and delivered a "brutal cross-check," as described by one of the Sportsnet game announcers, that struck Garland in the head, sending him to the ice.

Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers received match penalties for cross-checking in the dying seconds between the Oilers and Canucks. Both coaches were asked about the ending.
