NWS quietly unleashes new AI forecasts as massive winter storm slams US
A historic winter storm is tearing across the United States, burying cities in snow and glazing highways in ice just as federal forecasters quietly switch on a new generation of artificial intelligence models.
The NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC issued an extreme cold watch at 11:47 a.m. on Sunday valid from Monday 6 p.m. until Tuesday noon for Avery County.
Snowfall is expected to continue at the rate of about 2 inches an hour, possibly 3 inches, before tapering off between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
While this weekend’s winter storm already has delivered on the predicted bitter cold, it is likely to produce snowfall amounts slightly less than originally forecasted, the National Weather Service office in Topeka said.
A cold weather advisory was issued by the NWS Morristown TN on Saturday at 11:49 p.m. valid for Monday between midnight and 10 a.m. for Cherokee and Clay counties.
Tallahassee has issued a tornado watch for parts of Southwest Georgia. Storms are expected to begin to roll in around 2:00 p.m.
