The news comes less than a year after Neiman Marcus’ merger with Saks Fifth Avenue and shortly after the announcement of the closing of their CityPlace offices.

Back-to-back announcements centered on an iconic Dallas retail brand is sending shockwaves through the region. Neiman Marcus will shutter its flagship downtown Dallas store effective March 31, just months after Saks Global acquired the luxury retailer for $2.65 billion.

The closure in downtown Dallas is not tied to the recent acquisition by Saks Global, according to an internal memo sent Feb. 18 to employees by Saks Global Operating Group CEO Marc Metrick acquired by the Morning News. Metrick in the memo blamed the closure on an inability to reach an agreement with the building's landlord.

As an editorial in this paper noted, the loss comes as “a painful reckoning that a part of who we are is going away.” When Neiman Marcus is gone, downtown — once a regional mecca of department stores — will have no such institution remaining.
