As the weather cools off in Central New York, small game hunting is heating up. From waterfowl and upland gamebirds, to squirrels and rabbits, many small game hunting seasons open on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Squirrel season opens statewide Sept. 14 and runs through Nov. 29. Squirrels can also be hunted Dec. 16-24 and Dec. 26-Feb. 28. The daily limit is six. Pheasant season begins with a junior hunt Oct.
