One of the Republicans targeted by Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s gerrymander announced Friday night he will seek reelection as an independent as a last-ditch attempt to save his longshot candidacy.

It’s not clear how — or if — a state law about reporting requirements will be enforced. Republicans hand-counting in two other counties did not miss the deadline.

The chat, which was denounced by the state GOP, involved students and several top conservative leaders at Florida International University.
