The Trump administration is slashing the ranks of immigration judges in a drive to extend its broader crackdown to the administrative courts where they serve and speed up deportations.

Order says the Government bears the burden of establishing why Vizguerra is a flight risk or danger to the community.

Former immigration judge Tania Nemer, who was fired in February, is now suing the Trump administration, alleging that she was discriminated against despite strong performance reviews. Nemer is one of about 100 immigration judges who have been fired or reassigned since Trump took office.

"Around the world, America stands for something. Or it did," Jeremiah Johnson, a Trump-appointed judge, told Newsweek.

Multiple sources have confirmed that two San Francisco immigration judges will retire by end of year. Only seven will then remain.

An NBC News analysis found that the Trump administration has filed more than 117,000 requests to reopen cases immigration judges had deemed low priority.

Judges are limiting access to court proceedings, citing safety concerns. Observers say it’s an overreaction that hurts transparency.
